Performance is the foundation. And you have to love your job to be able to perform day in day out. If you don't like you job, find another one. Life is too short. If you can't find another, make yourself love your current job. That's life.
Image: "to be successful, you have to project an image of success". Decision makers judge you by the very brief encounters they have with you. A positive impression in that short encounter is worth many many overtime hours.
Exposure: get seen. get heard. get on the right project. Do you have an "elevator speech" ready for the big boss?
All these add up to credibility. once you have credibility, you have leverage in the organization. Watch those Chinese people around us that made it to management. There is nothing they did that we can't do. You just need some luck, right?
