Case 1
Usually, a group organizer doesn’t allow group members to pick numbers as they want. The reason is that the group organizer must ask a member to fill and sign his/her selection slips, and organizer must keep these slips within the group’s whole lifecycle, if picking number is allowed. Maybe you will ask why it is necessary to keep selection slips. Suppose one member wrongly marked a slip with number ’01 02 03 04 05 06’ however at that time the real number in his/her mind was ’01 02 03 04 05 07’. Unfortunately, nobody was aware of this mistake. On draw date, the winning number is, luckily or may not, ’02 03 04 05 07 48 49’, now you see what’s the trouble, very likely this group will be broken.
No group organizer would like to take this kind of trouble and no group organizer wants additional management work, so, quick pick is the only choice. But not everybody will accept those quick-pick numbers, especially when a group member sees some numbers like ’02 04 05 07 09 10’ (all numbers are within a ‘narrow’ range) or a number containing the number that he/she hates. In this case their feeling is like ‘two bucks are wasted’. Of course, I agree it’s only a psychological issue, I also agree every pick has an equal winning chance. As a matter of fact, many people say no to group play because they cannot invest their money on their favorite numbers.
Case 2
Each group that I know will force the members to buy the same amount of picks. The reason is simple, just for convenience of prize allocation. But sometimes this rule has to face challenges. As jackpot total prize is accumulated to an attractive amount, say, above $20000000, some members intend to raise the purchase share from $10/member to $25/member; some members don’t want to change. Every time in this situation, the organizer will feel depressed and helpless. No matter what choice you make, very likely you will lose a portion of your group members; your group’s winning chance will be decreased. Almost all the group players agree to accept the policy of ‘Allocating Prize in terms of Original Purchase Percentage’, however, a group organizer always refuses to take this policy because he/she doesn’t want to be lost in the prize calculation tricks, suppose your group has 15 members with different share percentage and it wins prize amount of $6236.47. See?
Case 3
Frequently a group wins a small amount of prize that is not necessary to allocate. For example, you win $45 but you have 8 members. A natural solution is transfer the small amount of prize to another group of the next draw. That means the original group’s lifecycle is not really over yet, it has a children now! The organizer must keep track of it until it’s completely over. If the children group wins another small amount of prize of $40, what will you think? It’s really a headache to an organizer especially when he/she has to operate another group that has different member composition at the same time!
Case 4
As a group organizer, he/she has to answer the same questions for many times. These questions might be like ‘How many picks in current group?’, ‘How much money has been collected in this group?’ and ‘How many members joined this group?’ It’s particular true when your group has a kind of dynamic member composition. For organizer, answering these questions is very boring, on the other hand, for group members, they will be happy if they can get the answers immediately anytime when they raise this kind of inquiries.
Case 5
In all the groups, the organizer will keep the tickets after purchase. And then, a responsible organizer will ask all the members to sign on all the tickets. And then, if the organizer is as serious as me, he/she will photocopy each ticket for each member. After that, nobody except organizer can touch the tickets for safe reason. So far so good. But when the winning number is released, headache is coming. For a group organizer, winning query is easy, just scan all the tickets. However, for group members, they have no way to do the winning query as easy as organizer because they only have photocopy of the tickets that cannot be accepted by the prize scanner. The only way is manually verifying each number on the photocopy with the winning number. Is it an easy task if the group, a general one with 5 – 8 members, has 100 picks (600 numbers)? What about 300 picks? Option 2 is to make winning query with organizer together, seems working, but few group members do that because they don’t want organizer to misunderstand he/she is not trustable. The general way is the organizer will do the winning query with 1 or 2 member representatives together. Even if so, in the mind of other group members, they really want to verify all the pick numbers by themselves, especially when the group is large enough but the winning query result is a little bit worse than what the group member expect. Option 3 is borrowing the tickets from organizer to do a query scan, but in the actual operation, this kind of request is always refused by organizer in case of ticket is lost, damaged and delayed of return, besides, some tickets have been returned for redeeming the prize.
Case 6
In traditional way of group play, a group organizer has no obligation of keeping the records of a historical group. Say, if a group member wants to track some information of a group happened two weeks ago because he/she has some suspicion. In this case, the organizer has to say sorry. However, the word of ‘sorry’ sometimes makes a member leaving the group for ever.
