The long term insurance usualy benefit your survivor only, but the pension will benefit both you and your survivor (usually your wife or your husband). The longer you and your survior live, the better you benefit from it. Think about why some companies prefer to pay the contractor more now for shaking off the long term pension burden in the future. How much pension you could earn depends on your years of service (pensionable service) and your highest average salary (usually the average last 5 years of your service). So, better to safeguard your pensionable job, and seek the chance of promotion inside, or look for another casual job outside to make up the extra for now. Or, ideally, one of the couple should on a stable pension plan for security, and the other does his/her higher paying contract job somwhere else. What is more, when people are getting old, they need more health care resources, the expenses are not cheap at all. Sometimes, the government subsided medical insurance is just not enough, or too long on waiting list for assistance, and the company extended medical and dental insurance will give you peace of mind when you are old , and chronically ill like most elderlys. I learn a lot of this from communication with my patients, colleagues and myself pension plan consellor. Just too busy to write the stories due to my busy life of living, working and studies. Of course, people may benefit from other plan of financial security. For the average working class, we should count it a blessing to staying with a secure job for the long run. Good luck.
