It is nothing wrong if you ask for salary range. That is your right, and that is a reasonable request from a serious applicant.

They are choosing the right applicant based on his salary expectation, and they will know your history when checking your references. You are choosing the right employer, and salary is an important factor to make decision. But you have no way to know it before hiring unless they are honest and serious enough to treat you as a valid applicant.
