the key objectives of your research and your methods of research, rough timelines and priorities and convince him how such time spent on resarch contribute to your task.
It is a matter of establishing trust with your boss. If you do a good efficient job this time, next time he will not be too concerned.
Spending a week on research is a lot of time and it does not sound too good that you are not confident of finding something.
