just got your message from YYYYYY regarding the "Harris' Shock and Vibration Handbook" we recently ordered, there are couple points I want to make it straight.
First of all, the books we purchased recently were selected from Mr. ZZZZZZ’s "must have" list. They are very crucial to all of us in our daily work, and stored in a common place so that everyone can have access to them and make the best use of them.
Secondly, as an engineer, I fully understand what information technology can do. The advent of internet provides an alternate way to retrieve information. However, the authority of information from internet is always questionable. Partial citation and incomplete assumptions are not uncommon. Therefore, when we use information extracted from internet, we should be very cautious. On the contrary, having good reference books handy is the best way to get away from those glitches associated with internet sources, and the time and effort on information hunting would be reduced significantly.
Mr. Manager, I do understand that the company is in a tough financial situation and every department is under tremendous pressure of cost cut. I agree with you on "use internet whenever possible". However, I reserve my opinion on trying to retain some necessary reference books in the inventory, which, I believe, will cost some money in the short run, but will be paid off eventually.
