There are great benefits of doing that cause your name would be part of the open source dev. team and it automatically goes to your resume.
One thing you might want to try is just download the GDB source and start analyze the code. Why, because you are familiar with the machine language and low-level C. And the GDB always needs to be ported to different processors.
You need a year or two to put your name on the GDB development list depending on your linux experience but it is worth every second.
FInally, do not spend your valuable after-tax income to take any courses. That won't work!
