One way is to become a Dr in states, right now I have several friends around me either just became a DR, or is doing residency or is matching or is studying USMLE. You can study USMLE and English while you are in Canada, right after you get your citizenship, you can go to states to do the residency.
37 is okay, I knew a lady matched residency in her 40s. Your medical background is your fortune not your weakness. However, you need your wife or somebody else to support you financially. Plan well, it is doable, what you need is to commit yourself for 6-7 years. 2-3 years to clear exam, 4 years to complete the residency.
[ZT] Steps to become a DR
1) Check to see if the medical school you graduated from in China is on the list of accepted foreign medical schools.
2) Check with your old medical school in China and ask them to prepare an English tran for you.
3) Study either Step 1 or Step 2 materials day in and day out. Make sure you can score over 90% if not 95% on the mock exams. There are a lot books and training courses for taking USMLE. Search online and you will fine some forums set up by foreign medical students who are trying to pass the USMLE.
4) Then apply for the Exam by sending copies of your passport, visa, and tran to ECFMG. ECFMG will send your tran back to the medical school in China to verify.
5) Once you are cleared by the "name check" process, you are allowed to choose a test date. You need to find a test center close to you and make an appointment.
6) Score as high as possible at both steps.
7) You'd better have some research experience at medical science or life science since that will add value to your resume when applying for residency or fellowship positions.
8) Start the "matching" process. Fly to whatever hospitals who give you an interview for internship. Impress them.
9) Spend 3 to 5 years as a resident medical doctor, pass the step 3 exam.
10) You can figure out from there now by yourself.
